NOVEMBER

11.03.06. 5 years of SOUNDS FROM THEE UNDERGROUND madness. The biggest NO FUN event of the year on the biggest bar night of the year has arrived!

Impeccable Rock'n'Roll poster by Dacho X (VISION X / KILLER DOLLS), a.k.a. Von Dach.

The 5-band festival/showcase is back! In addition to DJ and MC surprises, this year's Sounds From Thee Underground features an unbelievable line-up, which includes Detroit's goddess of PowerPop Miss Nikki Corvette teaming up with THE AVATARS!!! In addition, 5th Period Fever will be presenting his brand new line up, The Muldoons will show us that there's more than just hype to their Jack White-produced music, Terrible Twos will teach us something about strange rock noises involving keyboards, and Grande Nationals will throw their Ramones-influenced rock'n'roll right in our faces as they present their brand new album!

The festival is in its 5th year now. It originally started out in 2001 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to showcase bands on the label, bands that we wanted to check out for potential future signings, and friends of the label. The festival gained immediate recognition in the Buenos Aires underground scene from its first year and became a gathering of the rock’n’roll tribes of some sort. At least one band each year has been signed to the label after being showcased at a Sounds From Thee Underground. The format of the festival usually involves the bands signed to the label having priority on the bill.

***If you are a non-NO FUN RECORDS band and would like to be considered to play the festival next year (it usually takes place in October or November), contact No Fun Booking***

10.24.06. THE DEFECTORS' first American release ever gets reviewed.
The demanding --in a good way-- reviewers at the I-94 Bar over in Australia, where the standards for Detroit rock'n'roll are high, gave "Give In And Creep Out With..." 4 and 1/4 beers out of 5! Find out why.

THE DEFECTORS photographed by Doug Coombe at one of the ruins of Detroit while on tour in the Motor City.

10.23.06. THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS and THE DEFECTORS to play together in Copenhagen.
The celebration marks the 10-year anniversary of our label buddies Bad Afro, the bands European home. The party will take place in Copenhagen November 10th and 11th. The party starts Friday the 10th at Stengade 30 and continues Saturday at Loppen in Christania. THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS and THE DEFECTORS will be appearing November 11th at Loppen. Happy birthday Bad Afro, and thank you for pushing so much good Scandinavian rock to the man over the past 10 years!

10.21.06. CORONADOS to record its full length debut album.

CORONADOS entered the studio to record its first full length. Tracks are being recorded at Jeff Meier's Lounge Pad studio in Detroit. The album will most likely feature 10 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, and it will feature an important line up of guest musicians from the Detroit scene. Rumor has it the record will be filled with pure raw energy and mad dance beats that will make this one an irresistible release. The band plans to tour internationally once the record is released.
Here's a bit of the recording action (including video). Below, Claudia taking a break from recording drum tracks:

10.20.06. More KAHUNAS surf show madness.

10.18.06. THE DEFECTORS want the airwaves.

10.16.06. More impressive reviews for THE CYRIL LORDS' "Motherland" come in.

This time it is Australia's I-94 Bar that highly recommends this piece of wicked Motor City rock'n'roll to the rest of the world. Read on and get your copy of "Motherland" while it's still around.

10.15.06. Goodbye CBs, Home of Underground Rock!
OK, so today is not a good day, as it marks the last show at CBGBs ever. What a terrible shame. The fact that no one could do anything to keep this place open just goes to show that the world has officially gone to total SHIT. Enjoy these pics of THE AVATARS and THE DEFECTORS back in the good ol' days when neither band thought they would see the closing of the legendary CBGBs in their lifetimes.

10.13.06. Old school NO FUN.
No other than MOTOSIERRA and THE TANDOORIS join forces to rock the crowds on the 20th and 21st of this month.

09.15.06. CSS's smashing international success brings attention to earlier project THEE BUTCHERS' ORCHESTRA.
It appears that Adriano Cintra's involvement with Brazilian sensations Cansei de Ser Sexy is bringing the spotlight back to his previous musical projects, Brazilian blues-punk rockers THEE BUTCHERS' ORCHESTRA being at the heart of it. As a result, NO FUN's 2003 release "Drag Me Twice" by TBO gets a much deserved outstanding review at All Music Guide. Find out about Adriano's talented past! Guaranteed that you'll dig it, and if you do make sure to get your copy while we still have a few around.

09.12.06. NO FUN meets No Fun in Buenos Aires.
What do Iggy & the Stooges and THE TANDOORIS have in common?
There is a reason why Ann Arbor's NO FUN RECORDS is called NO FUN, and as we couldn't have it any other way, the Buenos Aires/Ann Arbor/Detroit connection comes around full circle. NO FUN artists THE TANDOORIS will be opening for Iggy and the Stooges at PopArt's Pepsi Music Festival 2006 in Buenos Aires Argentina. So go early and enjoy some TANDOORIS' "Science Fiction Guaranteed" while you wait to catch the amazing ones and only, Iggy & the Stooges. NO FUN my babe NO FUN!

AUGUST

08.26.06. ELIO & THEE HORRIBLES reunion show!
We thank all of our lucky stars for having been in Buenos Aires when this event took place. Everyone's favorite monsters of the B.A. underground music scene got back together and played their first show since 2002. THEE HORRIBLES are one of those gems from the early days of the NO FUN catalog and so they hold a special place in our hearts. Footage from the show can be found here. The photo captures their restless live energy.

08.24.06. Experience LOS KAHUNAS live, on CD and in print.
If there's something NO FUN enjoys while traveling the world is meeting up with its international artists and supporting what they do. The label's last trip back to its motherland coincided with one of LOS KAHUNAS' magical surf shows. Follow the link to check out the band performing at Music Pub. Below is the label's pretty half with surf masters LOS KAHUNAS, the band in action practicing their famous guitar waves, plus here you can read reviews from Pipeline Rock Instrumental Magazine (U.K.) and The Continental Magazine (U.S.), and see the new U.S. compilation CD that features them. You can get a copy of this latest surf comp from our on-line store.

08.19.06. Blogs rank THE AVATARS' "Never A Good Time" high and among the best in the category of "Classic Pop Albums."
Scroll down to the very end of this link and find local rock heroes THE AVATARS up there with no other than classics like The Cars, the Go Gos, Ramones and Blondie!

08.10.06. Brazil's Rock Around The Blog highly recommends one of NO FUN's latest, and finest, releases: "Motherland" by THE CYRIL LORDS.
Enjoy the Portuguese version of this review (since the English translation makes no sense!). Good stuff all around though.

JULY

07.17.06. Brazil's finest Rock'n'Roll soldiers, FORGOTTEN BOYS, on film.
The band made an impressive professional short film for their "5 Mentiras" track. The video features the band members' real life girlfriends and wives on stage playing the guys, including popular Brazilian actress Debora Falabella, and it has been on rotation on Brazilian MTV. Watch this catchy film/video here!
Exclusive, and never shown before, images of the making of the video below:

07.16.06. Historic MANGANZOIDES appearance along with legendary Saicos.
Something huge took place this year at Barrio de Lince in Lima, Perú. And that is that peruvian garage punk legends Los Saicos were honored in their hometown with a plaque stating that they had given birth to Punk Rock some 40+ years earlier, something once said by The Cramps' Lux Interior. The band was also the first group in all of South America to record all original tracks. In early 1965 they recorded tracks that were called wild and aggressive, displaying a never-seen-before attitude. These tracks are considered to have anticipated the sound that took over the world in the late 70s: punk rock. Several decades later new generations continue to discover Los Saicos. Always a pioneer in finding great new music NO FUN discovered MANGANZOIDES in 2000 and released their, now sold out, first full length "Sobredosis de Horror" in 2001. The band returned to the label in 2003 for a second release, "Radio Komodo." A few copies of "Radio Komodo" are still available. NO FUN's MANGANZOIDES are basically the modern day reincarnation of Los Saicos, and so it only made sense that MANGANZOIDES served as back up band during the one and only Saicos performance given ever since. WOW.

Here's an exclusive photo of Erwin Flores performing Los Saicos' "Demolicion" with MANGANZOIDES backing him up (MANGANZOIDES' Gonzalo Alcalde in the background).

Here are some more photos of the event.

07.15.06. LOS KAHUNAS big surf show in Buenos Aires totally sold out.
A night to remember.

07.10.06. THE TANDOORIS present two of their latest videos.
Check out Looking For A Nurse and You Complain Too Much both directed by David Bisbano. The first track corresponds to "Science Fiction Guaranteed," and the second track to"Walking Blind," their only two records to this day and both on NO FUN.

07.09.06. RELEASE PARTIES AND INTERNATIONAL TOURS.

07.07.06. Simple formula, THE AVATARS + Andre Williams = Rock. THE AVATARS + Radio Birdman's Deniz Tek = More Rock!!

04.06.06.
The evil fuzzkings of Denmark to join the NO FUN family. Meet THE DEFECTORS!
NO FUN also welcomes, all the way from Denmark, THE DEFECTORS. Amazingly enough, we discovered these guys down in South America when they got to share the stage with NO FUN act CORONADOS. How could we resist a band whose motto is "The Defectors care! - For girls. For cars. For cigarettes and beer and fuzzed out rock’n’roll..." See, now you know what we're talking about! THE DEFECTORS are a Danish top quality old school-sound garage act. They're on Bad Afro Records/VME (indie/major) in their native land, and are label mates with other NO FUN familiar names like The Flaming Sideburns, in addition to a bunch of other cool Scandinavian bands. The band has just landed a major Russian licensing deal, which gets them massive distribution in Russia for several of the tracks included in their release with NO FUN. This also means that THE AVATARS release party will be a double record release party, given that the same night THE DEFECTORS will tear the club apart to introduce "Give In And Creep Out With...," their US release on NO FUN. The band will also be hitting the road in the US, and making several radio appearaces for live sets, interviews, and tickets giveaways, courtesy of NO FUN BOOKING. Keep an eye on this website for tour dates, and get ready to experience what fans in Europe, Canada, South America have already experienced. Let the Defectors-mania start!

04.05.06. THE AVATARS RETURN TO THE LABEL AND OFFICIALLY SIGN A DEAL!
NO FUN would like to welcome back THE AVATARS to the label, this time for a proper CD/LP deal. Super special guests on the bill will be announced soon. Guests on the record include Johnny Hentch of Detroit's The Hentchmen and SSM, and Eric Stollsteimer from Mondo Mod and Detroit soul sensation The Elevations, and Jeremy Abbey of Superdot. Other release parties will follow the Ann Arbor celebration. The band will also embark on a Midwest/East Coast tour shortly after that. You can pre-order this juicy release here.

MARCH

03.27.06.
THE HARD LESSONS to play with the New York Dolls, and THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS with Iggy and The Stooges!
If there's something that NO FUN is very excited about is these two shows: coming up on April 3 2006 at 9:00PM at LA's Spaceland, our very own THE HARD LESSONS with the legendary New York Dolls for the Dolls' only Los Angeles appearance. Be there, punk. Also coming up, Eduardo and his boys are confirmed to support Iggy and the Stooges on the Stooges' first visit to Finland ever. The show will take place at Sauna Open Air on Thursday June 8. Start booking your plane tickets to Finland, people!
That's what we'd be doing if it weren't for the fact that by June we'll have some very exciting matters going on at the NO FUN HQs. But we'll tell you about that later. Keep your eyes on this News section!

03.19.06. Buenos Aires Metropolis features NO FUN, THE AVATARS and THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS.
The March issue of Buenos Aires Metropolis Magazine featured NO FUN's Claudia Leo and Charlie Lorenzi in a special article about Argentine rock'n'rollers abroad, their work, foreign views, life stories, along with those of Eduardo Martinez of THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS. The magazine claims that these Argentine rockers owe a lot more to Iggy Pop than to the tango's nostalgia. Fans of THE AVATARS, you should read this article...if you read Spanish, that is. Find the latest issue of BA Metropolis at your favorite newstand...in Buenos Aires, that is.

03.18.06. LOS KAHUNAS and MANGANZOIDES present their brand new music videos.
LOS KAHUNAS, one of the lastest acts to sign with the label, has also recently filmed a music video. The band chose to showcase their track "Another Summer Song." Watch out for dangerous waves!

Meanwhile MANGANZOIDES has used animation for a music video of "Mujer Boa" off of their sold out "Sobredosis de Horror" release on NO FUN. Curious? Go here.

03.05.06. NO FUN RECORDS first and only label to have a showcase night at the Metro Times Blowout! 4 nights, 200 bands!
The NO FUN Showcase was held at the Knights of Columbus on Saturday March 4th, basically, at the biggest venue on the biggest night of the event. The night featured NO FUN's CORONADOS, THE AVATARS, THE CYRIL LORDS and THE HARD LESSONS, along with femme fatales The Vamps. All the bands were on fire and it was pure madness as witnessed by the 700 who attended. And of course, the fact that Nikki Corvette was in the house just made our night all the better! Both THE AVATARS and THE HARD LESSONS got a great review of their Blowout performances. Endless thanks to Anthony Morrow for the support and the spotless organization.

03.01.06. SXSW!
NO FUN's THE HARD LESSONS to play SXSW as they kick off their spring U.S. tour. Check out tour dates here.

FEBRUARY

02.20.06. Red carpet anyone?
Much went on in Detroit for the Super Bowl played on February 5, but one of the things that went on was THE HARD LESSONS on the red carpet for the SPIN Magazine Super Bowl event in Detroit. Pleasure for your eyes.

Expandable Crew Member Films also has some HARD LESSONS live footage action from the Super Bowl weekend.
Below, THE HARD LESSONS performing at some of the Super Bowl festivities. More photos by David Dominic, Jr can be found here.

02.18.06. Killer KILLER DOLLS reunion!
The news of the year so far had been the KILLER DOLLS reunion show. Yes, the band that gave birth to this label was scheduled to make a comeback last night in their native Buenos Aires, for 1 exclusive show only. On the bill was also NO FUN's LOS KAHUNAS. Unfortunately, the venue was unexpectedly shut down at the last minute and the show cancelled. Being a "cult" appearance of sorts for the Buenos Aires scene, the show had purposely not been massively advertised. Still, apologies to the almost 400 attendees who came from different parts of the city, including far away suburbs, and were left outside the venue to hope for...next year's KILLER DOLLS reunion show! Stay tuned.
Here's a photo of the KILLER DOLLS' soundcheck while the venue was still open. Other images of what went on can be found here and here.

02.12.06. Miss Melody Licious of CORONADOS fame has join RIFF2 for her own radio show!
"Detroit Local 101" with Suzy Cole and Melody Licious is a new Detroit Rock radio show that can be heard on Riff2, WRIF 101.1's HD radio station. Listen to it worldwide on the internet. The show airs every Tuesday night from 10 p.m.-midnight (EST). Hear the best rock and roll Detroit has to offer with your hosts, rock radio goddess Suzy Cole and rock scribe and musician Melody Licious of NO FUN's CORONADOS. Detroit bands will occasionally join the show for acoustic sets and interviews, or as co-hosts.

02.07.06. Hard Rock.

LOS KAHUNAS live appearance at the Hard Rock Cafe, Buenos Aires. Tonight!

02.02.06. Smart, sexy and sassy.
Strut Magazine interviewed THE HARD LESSONS' Miss Ko Ko Louise for a piece on gender issue in Rock. And one thing is for sure, Ko Ko can rock.

02.01.06. End of summer fun. Hot pictures.
Last summer THE AVATARS were invited to participate of a big open air event in Ohio called Studio-A-Rama. Some pictures have now become available (click "next" to see more pictures).

JANUARY

01.30.06. Paint it ORANGE.
NO FUN's deluxe rockers FORGOTTEN BOYS are now sponsored by ORANGE!

The Erlewine brothers gave him the name "Iguana," which metamorphisized to "Iggy," which led to the name he became famous as -- Iggy Pop. Dan Erlewine and his brother Michael were at the core of the band. Following the Prime Movers' slow disbandment, Dan became an internationally-known guitar repairman and a monthly columnist for Guitar Player magazine. Michael, also singer and guitar player in the Prime Movers, founded All Music Guide, which became the largest music database in the world and is based out of Ann Arbor, where the NO FUN RECORDS HQs are also located.
